Milbert O. Brown, Jr. is an assistant professor at Howard University’s School of Communications. Professor Brown teaches multi-media, photojournalism and visual communications in the Department of Media, Journalism and Film.
In addition to his teaching duties, the professor serves as the Editor of The Oracle Magazine, the official international membership publication for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He also produces creative strategies for educational and multi- media projects as the director of Brown Media Consulting.
The Indiana native graduated from Ball State University with a B.S. in journalism. He also earned the Master of Arts degree from Ohio University’s prestigious School of Visual Communication. Professor Brown is a doctorate candidate (ABD) in Higher Education at Morgan State University. Some of his research interest includes the study of Black Photographers, contemporary social documentary imagery, Negro League Baseball and educational success outcomes.
During his three-decade career, Brown, a unique storyteller has captured the historical and cultural tapestry of several African American communities using his gifts as an editor, journalist and visual artist. His distinguished skills provided him the opportunity to work as a picture editor and photojournalist at some of the nation's top newspapers including Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and Washington Post. While at the Tribune, he shared journalism's highest honor-- the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Explanatory Reporting as a contributing staff member in 2001.
Brown gained international photographic reporting experience during his coverage of South Africa’s free election, and the inauguration of Nelson Mandela. He was one of six U.S. journalists selected by a special National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and United Nations joint committee to cover Liberia's elections as a United Nations Overseas Reporting Fellow. In 2015, Brown was also the recipient of an International Center For Journalists (ICFJ) fellowship. As an HBCU Faculty Fellow, he produced digital multi-media projects in New York City for BuzzFeed and WNYC.
